At Makangale Bay, we believe tourism should protect the environment and support local people. We do not run passive donation programs. Instead, we build real conservation work, local hiring, and shared infrastructure directly into our daily operations. Each stay helps keep Pemba wild and contributes meaningfully to the island economy.
Coconut Crab Conservation
The hotel grounds at Makangale Bay is home to one of three last strong populations of giant coconut crabs on the Zanzibar archipelago. We protect their habitat and protect them againts poaching through a partnership with a british Proffessor and a team of local research assistants.
Shared Clean Water
Our water at Makangale Bay is shared with our neighbor village. Every stay at Makangale Bay keeps the pump and the water tower running supplying the lodge and the community with fresh water.
Contribution to Marine and Forest Protection
Most excursions at Makangale Bay includes official conservation fees for the Pemba Channel Conservation Area (PECCA) or to the Ngezi Forest Reserve. These entry fees pay rangers and coastal villages to support alternative local livelihoods.
Local Jobs and Sourcing
Most of our team come directly from nearby villages. By offering fair, steady jobs and buying fresh food from local farmers and fishermen, we help families earn a good living through sustainable tourism. This removes the need for destructive activities like cutting forest trees or using illegal reef nets to survive.
