What to Expect
Year-Round: The Pemba channel is home to pods of Spinner Dolphins that travel in large groups. They are high-energy and famous for launching themselves meters into the air, spinning rapidly on their axis right next to the boat. You will also have the opportunity to see bottlenose dolphins, larger, highly curious guys that love to ride our bow wave and look right up at you through the clear water. If we get lucky in the deep water, we sometimes spot Risso’s Dolphins or pods of Pilot Whales.
July to October: The Humpback Migration reaches the warm water of Pemba. Humpback Whales migrate over 5,000 kilometers north from the Antarctic to the warm, protected waters of the Zanzibar archipelago to mate, give birth, and nurse their newborn calves. Because the 1,000-meter drop-off of the Pemba Channell sits so close to our coastline, you can witness humback whales just a short distance from land. Other species can also be seen at this time of the year, but the humbacks are usually the main attraction.
