The Lodge
Makangale Bay is located on the western shores of Pemba Island and sits quietly inside the natural landscape. Surrounded by trees, tropical plants and coastal waters, the lodge offers a simple, peaceful space to rest between daily ocean and forest adventures.
Rooms
All rooms at Makangale Bay offer a comfortable retreat after a day on the island. Every room is equipped with air conditioning and ceiling fans to keep you cool. All rooms are oriented facing the ocean, with some rooms offering partial sea views through the lush greenery from the rooms and the private terraces.
Bar & Restaurant
Our open air restaurant serves fresh, local meals cooked daily. We source seafood directly from nearby fishermen and pick up fresh tropical produce from island farms. The bar and deck sits right at the edge of the Pemba Channel and offers some of the best sunset views on the Island.
Outdoor Gym
Stay active during your stay in our open-air gym. Surrounded by greenery, the gym space features locally made, but functional training gear, pull-up bars and weights, all cooled by natural shade and sea breeze.
Pool and Gardens
Set elevated above the coastline, our pool offers a calm spot to swim, cool off, or read a book under the shade. Comfortable loungers surround the deck with a view of the ocean horizon.
The Beach & Coastline
Our beach in front of the lodge is small, natural, and changes with the seasons. From May through October, the trade winds form a sandy beach along our shore. During the rest of the year, shifting winds and tides carry the sand away, revealing the natural coral limestone coastline underneath. When the tide is out or the sand shifts, the coast is fantastic for beachcombing. At low tide, you can walk along the exposed tidal flats to spot small marine life, shells, and tidal pools. At night, bring a flashlight to explore the shoreline as tidal pools comes alive with crabs, small sea creatures, and fish in the shallows.
Wildlife at the Lodge
Our grounds are kept intentionally wild, making the lodge a fantastic spot for watching local wildlife right from your veranda or the paths.
- Giant Coconut Crab: These endangered, massive crabs live in the natural rock crevices around the property. Read more about our Coconut Conservation Project
- Bush Babies: Look up into the trees after dark to spot these small nocturnal primates leaping between branches.
- Birdlife: The lodge gardens is a heaven for birds. 3 of the 4 endemic bird species are regularly seen.
- Humpback Whales: Between July and October, migrating humpback whales frequently pass directly in front of the lodge. We often spot them breaching right from the restaurant deck.
