We hire our team locally and buy our food from nearby farmers and fishermen so that tourism brings real, lasting benefits to Pemba by creating reliable jobs, supporting local families, and building a sustainable future for the residents of the nearby communities.
Local Hiring
Most of the staff members come directly from our neighboring villages. Most of our excursions are handled by residents of the nearby villages Tonondooni and Makangale. One of our main contributions to Pemba and the surrounding villages are reliable jobs. Jobs give locals a way to earn a steady living through eco-tourism, guiding, and hospitality. When families can support themselves through tourism, they do not have to rely on destructive practices, like cutting down trees for timber or using illegal ring nets on coral reefs and protecting the eco systems of Pemba becomes a way to protect their jobs and sources of income.
Locally sourced food
We buy most of our food directly from local farmers and small scale fishermen on Pemba. Fresh local catch using sustainable fishing methods. We purchase daily seafood, like octopus, changu, and calamari directly from local fishermen. Fruits, vegetables, cassava, and spices are all bought from nearby family farms. We try our best to source as much as possible from local producers as this minimizes transport and contributes to the local economy. Some things like coffee are sourced from high altitude areas on the mainland like Arusha region. A few things which are not available from Tanzania such as wine and some spirits are imported.
