Marine and Forest Protection
The natural ecosystems of Pemba Island from deep ocean channels to ancient rainforest canopies are facing a range of pressure from different threats such as overfishing, poaching and logging. Protecting these fragile environments requires real, daily funding for ranger patrols, scientific research, and community support. At Makangale Bay we have built conservation fees directly into our excursion costs so that every dive, boat trip, and forest walk actively funds the preservation of Pemba’s natural heritage.
Conservation of the Pemba Channel
All of our water activities take place inside the North Pemba Channel Conservation Area (PECCA). PECCA is a protected marine sanctuary managed by Blue Alliance PECCA in partnership with Zanzibar’s Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries.Every time you head out on the water with us, whether diving, snorkeling, visiting a sandbank, or searching for dolphins, the conservation fee is included in your activity cost. This fees goes straight to the Blue Alliance who oversees the protection and conservation of the Pemba Channel. They make sure no destructive form of fishing take place, they regrow mangrove forests and monitor the reefs.
Conservation fees to the Pemba Channel Conservation Area:
- 50% Funds Marine Protection: Pays for daily ranger boat patrols, stopping illegal fishing, monitoring coral health, and restoring damaged reefs.
- 35% Supports Coastal Communities: Directly funds local coastal villages to support alternative livelihoods and community projects.
- 15% Covers Government Oversight: Supports the government ministry responsible for regulating and protecting Zanzibar’s marine resources.
Contribution to the Conservation of Ngezi Forest
When you take a guided trip to the neighboring Ngezi Vumawimbi Nature Forest Reserve, your entrance fee goes directly toward protecting one of Zanzibar’s last remaining primary rainforests. These fees pay for local forest rangers, trail maintenance, and habitat protection for native wildlife, including the Pemba flying fox and rare local monkeys.
